It’s that time of year again. Time to brave the cold, and even more so, think about braving the stores for holiday shopping. Luckily, some of my favorite finds can be purchased for your treasured loves with just a few clicks of the mouse, keeping you warm (and sane) during your shopping experience this year.
Below are a few of the products I’m loving right now, tried and tested by yours truly.
1. Think Dirty App
A few weeks ago, I was taking a look at all of my lotions, shampoos, and make-up that I use daily, and getting overwhelmed by all of the ingredients I couldn’t pronounce in these products. Wanting to clean up my home environment, and make sure that what I put on my skin (the body’s largest organ) is as clean as possible, I instantly fell in love with the Think Dirty app.
Alright, so an app isn't really something you can put in someone's stocking, but this app is free, easy to use, neatly packages valuable information, and therefore I like it a lot.
You scan the barcode of your beauty and home products, and the app gives the product a rating based on whether any of its chemicals have been linked to three factors: carcinogenicity; developmental and reproductive toxicity; and allergies and immunotoxicities. If your product isn’t found in the app’s catalogue, you’re invited to snap a photo of your product so the Think Dirty team can continue to expand the product database. Crowdsourcing at its best.
It was a bit disheartening that almost every sample I’d received from one of those cute subscription box companies was high on the dirty meter. Keep in mind that the Think Dirty app doesn't take into account ingredient percentages, and definitely has a dirty bias toward any ingredient called "fragrance," so this app shouldn't be the end all be all to your decision making. But the app definitely made me more aware of the ingredients in my products - bringing such things to a conscious level then allows you to make informed decisions about what to keep and what to toss.
This is only one trash can’s worth, but you can see how much I was willing to part with.
I also love Think Dirty because when you find a “dirty” product, the app gives you some suggestions of cleaner alternatives as a starting point. You can then build your own “Bathroom Shelf” to keep track of the products in your home.
Which leads me to my next must have . . .
2. 100% Pure
I’ve owned a 100% Pure product which I’ve loved for awhile now – the Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream.
And after tossing nearly all of my "dirty" make-up, I did a lot of research and found that 100% Pure is a great go-to brand for all of my make-up needs.
My new favorite lipstick is 100% Pure’s Fruit Pigmented Pomegranate Oil Anti Aging Lipstick. It is hydrating and is made from clean products (it scored a 2 on the Think Dirty App). I’m in love with the Foxglove color!
I also tried out 100% Pure’s Fruit Pigmented Eye Brow Powder Gel in Brunette (0 on the Think Dirty app) after tossing my Anastasia Brow Powder (which scored a shocking 10 out of 10 on the Think Dirty app for its use of three different parabens among other nasties).
And lastly, I tried 100% Pure’s Fruit Pigmented Mascara in Dark Chocolate (0 on the Think Dirty app) and LOVE it because it stays on, doesn’t make my eyes burn, and it smells like chocolate. Win-Win-WIN!
3. Matador Backpack
I’ve been searching for a perfect daypack for years. I would go into REI or Paragon Sports and try on every backpack, and none of them fit the bill. Most of the straps felt like they weren’t built for a girl’s curves, they weren’t waterproof, and they all had more weight to them than I felt like carrying.
Matador is a company based in Boulder that I stumbled upon after signing up for a contest through @GreenMatters (a sustainability news outlet I love) and ending up on Matador’s listserve. I’m normally the kind of person who needs to see, touch, and feel products in person before purchasing, but something made me click on an image of a Matador daypack in an email they sent me, and after reading all of the excellent reviews, I took the leap. I had a coupon, and with free shipping, this is the best $40 I’ve spent in awhile on outdoor gear!
I ordered the indigo blue pack and was delighted with its beautiful color when it arrived. I gave the pack a test run when I was in Aspen recently hiking the Sunnyside Trail.
The pack was awesome! It’s waterproof, and incredibly lightweight. The straps feel great on my shoulders/chest, and I love that the zippers are also water resistant. Bonus: the pack folds up on itself into a small little bag for easy travel. Click here for a special discount code!
4. Scoria Yoga Mat
Again on a mission recently to clean up my home environment, I took a look around and wondered what all of those free yoga mats I’ve accumulated at various events over the years are made of. I did a little research, and what I found was a bit scary. Many yoga mats contain organophosphate flame retardants (PFRs). This chemical can get on your hands, your face, or when the mats start to break down and flake off, PFRs can be inhaled into your lungs. According to a study published in August 2017, contact with PFRs has been linked to infertility.
Luckily, I discovered Scoria. An inspiring company, using sustainable practices, chemical free materials, and with a give-back model that donates six meals to a hungry child with every mat purchased.
Scoria’s cork yoga mats are designed with playful motifs to bring out your inner play, and I’ve loved mine so far. The best part is that I don’t have to worry about breathing anything harmful into my body when my face is near the mat!
These are just a few ideas for gifts that could bring a little more health and wellness into your life. Have a clean product that you love? Please share it with the community below!
And if you want to give the gift of health to yourself, a loved one, or a friend this holiday season, a private yoga or health coaching session with me is a great option (in-home or by Skype). Holiday gift certificates available here!
